AIMIM Chief and Hyderabad MP Asaduddin Owaisi on Sunday made a strong appeal to Chief Minister K Chandrashekhar Rao not to extend the State-wide lockdown any further, even as the State Cabinet went into a huddle to discuss various issues including lockdown extension.
The MP, in a tweet, said: “Strongly urge Telangana Chief Minister to not extend lockdown. If goal is to reduce lockdown, then we may consider evening curfews ( 6 pm onwards) or mini lockdown for covid clusters. But expecting 3.5 crore people to live for weeks with just four hour lockdown relaxation is not fair at all.”
Stating that lockdown was not helpful in containing the spread of the virus, Owaisi, in a series of tweets, said: “As data shows, Covid cases were already reducing much before lockdown was imposed on May 12. It’s quite clear
that it’s not lockdown that helped. It’s also clear that Covid can be combated without lockdown”
Stressing on vaccination as effective means to control Corona cases, he said: “The only long-term solution is universal vaccination. Lockdowns give a cruel choice to the poor: poverty, police atrocities or pandemic. They make public health crisis into a law and order problem. They are neither scientific nor a humanitarian strategy.”
Emphasising on the need to educate people about the pandemic and enforcement of Covid guidelines, the MP said: “We have to accept that the pandemic is a long term reality. One can combat only by educating people about mask use and social distancing, and tweaking government policies to encourage and enable such lifestyle change.”
