Hyderabad: All India Majlis-e-Ittehadul Muslimeen chief and Hyderabad MP Asaduddin Owaisi said that the Uniform Civil Code (UCC) being proposed by the BJP-led government at the Centre was 'biased' and in favour of the religious morality of the religious majority. Addressing a press conference here on Friday, Owaisi said that he submitted AIMIM's response to the Law Commission on the UCC.

Owaisi alleged that BJP had initiated this "political exercise" in the name of seeking responses from stakeholders on UCC to reap political dividends in the Lok Sabha polls and to divert attention of people from the real issues such as poverty, unemployment and Chinese transgression. Owaisi said that he was not surprised over the moves of the Law Commission’s seeking responses on the UCC.

"This is not a coincidence that exactly after five years the Law Commission is undertaking this exercise. Like clockwork, five or six months before the general elections, the BJP raises this issue. The aim is to vitiate the atmosphere and polarise the electorate so that they

reap political gains in the 2024 elections," Owaisi stated while claiming that the 22nd Law Commission did not give any proposal, but merely cited the 21st commission’s work.

He added that AIMIM's response on UCC also included the legal opinion expressed by Justice V. Gopala Gowda on the subject.

Owaisi said that the tribal population in the country comprised 11.5 crore and expressed concern that the UCC would destroy their diverse customs.

He dared Prime Minister Narendra Modi to visit Adilabad and tell the Gond community about the implementation of UCC. He also dared the Goa Chief Minister Pramod Sawant to remove the uniform civil laws there and the BJP to inform the tribals of the north eastern states of the UCC exercise.

He lashed out at Kerala Governor Arif Mohammed Khan for his remarks on the UCC. He said, "As Governor he should not shower praises on a political party. If he wants so, he should resign from his post and join BJP."
