Majlis-e-Ittehadul Muslimeen president Asaduddin Owaisi, on Thursday said that the Supre me Court verdict on privacy as a fundamental right is the `defeat' of Prime Minister Narendra Modi-led government even as he welcomed the judgment.

The Hyderabad parliamentarian said the govern ment claimed that the right to privacy is an `elitist' concern. It is not suited for a developing

country and that the apex court did not accept this stand.

Owaisi claimed that the Centre was seeking to create a police state, by making its stand on the subject. “It is a victory of the common man and against the police state that the government was trying to create. I welcome judgement of the Supreme Court,“ the Majlis-e-Ittehadul Muslimeen supremo said.
