In response to tariffs imposed by United States President Donald Trump, Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau has announced 25% tariffs on 155 billion dollars worth of American goods coming into the country.
Addressing a press conference in Ottawa today, Mr Trudeau announced imposing a 25% tariff on 30 billion dollars of American imports beginning on Tuesday, and a similar tariff on 125 billion dollars worth of American goods in 21 days.
China has also opposed the United States’ move to levy a 10% additional tariff on Chinese imports. China has said that it will take necessary countermeasures to defend its legitimate rights and interests. In a statement, China’s Foreign Ministry
Spokesperson claimed that China’s position is firm and consistent, as trade and tariff wars have no winners. The spokesperson further said that the US unilateral tariff hikes severely violate WTO rules, and this move cannot solve the US’ problems at home.
Earlier, Mexican President Claudia Sheinbaum said that her country will retaliate against tariffs imposed by U.S. President Donald Trump with its own set of tariffs and other countermeasures. In a social media post, Ms Sheinbaum said that she had instructed her economy minister to implement ‘Plan B,’ a strategy they have been preparing, which includes both tariff and non-tariff measures to safeguard Mexico’s interests.
