To manage overall food security and prevent hoarding and unscrupulous speculation, the Centre has imposed stock limits on wheat applicable to traders, wholesalers, retailers, big chain retailers, and processors in all states and union territories.
Addressing the media in New Delhi, Secretary, of the Department of Food and Public Distribution Sanjeev Chopra, said that for traders and wholesalers, the stock limit of wheat will be three thousand metric tonnes; for retailers, it will be 10 metric tonnes; and for big chain retailers, the stock limit will be metric ton tonnes for each outlet and three thousand metric tonnes at all their depots. Mr.
Chopra said that the stock limits on these entities will be in force until March 31, 2025. He further added that the government will review the stock limits based on the requirements to ensure that the price of wheat remains stable.
Mr Chopra also rejected media reports about a shortage of wheat and clarified that there is no shortage of wheat in the country. He reiterated that all options are open with the government, and stock limits are one of the options it has taken. He said the prices of wheat are stable, and in the interest of consumers, it will maintain some stability in the prices.
