The government today revised upward the country's overall foodgrain production by 2.3 million tonnes to a record 275.68 million tonnes in 2016-17 crop year that ended in June. Releasing the 4th Advance
Estimates of production of major crops for 2016-17, the Agriculture Ministry said, record production has been achieved in rice, wheat, coarse cereals and pulses due to the good rainfall and various initiatives taken by the government.The previous record of 265.04 million tonnes was achieved in 2013-14 crop year while the production had declined to 251.57 million tonnes in 2015-16.
As per the estimates, rice output is estimated at record 110.15 million tonnes which is higher by 3.50 million tonnes than previous record production of 106.65 million
tonnes achieved during 2013-14. Wheat production is also estimated at record 98.38 million tonnes and it is higher by 2.53 million tonnes than the previous record production of 95.85 million tonnes in 2013-14.
Pulses production during 2016-17 is is also estimated at 22.95 million tonnes which is higher by 3.70 million tonnes than the previous record production of 19.25 million tonnes in 2013-14. The Ministry said,Coarse Cereals is estimated at a record level of 44.19 million tonnes and Oilseeds production is estimated at 32.10 million tonnes in 2016-17.
Sugarcane production is estimated at 306.72 million tonnes which is lower by 41.73 million tonnes against last year production of 348.45 million tonnes.
