India's wholesale price inflation, or WPI, rose to 10.49 per cent in April compared to 7.39 per cent in March on account of sharp surge in oil price and global commodity prices.
"The inflation in April is high primarily because of the rise in prices of crude petroleum and manufactured products as compared to the corresponding month of the previous year," the official release said.
Inflation in
the fuel and power basket zoomed to 20.94 per cent in April while Manufactured products inflation stood at 9.01 per cent. Food inflation rose to 4.92 per cent and non-food particle inflation jumped to 15.58 per cent, according to the data released by the ministry.
While vegetable prices pulled the index down, food items like egg, meat, fish and pulses witnessed hardening of prices.
