The Reserve Bank of India (RBI) on Tuesday said that Rs.10 coins are legal tenders contrary to rumours. The bank said, “It has been reported that some uninformed persons are creating doubts about the genuineness of Rs.10 coins...stopping circulation of such coins in certain pockets of Telangana and AP .“ It asked people not to give credence to such rumours.
The banks said coins in new denominations and new designs reflect various themes and are introduced
from time to time to meet the transaction needs of people. “ As coins remain in circulation for longer periods, it is possible different designs and even shapes are circulating at the same time,“ the clarification said, mentioning such change accompanied introduction of 'Rupee symbol' on coins in July 2011. So the new Rs.10 coins have the `Rupee symbol' but the earlier ones of the same denomination are without the same. Both are legal tender and valid for transactions.
