Samsung has finally unveiled its mid-range line-up for 2017, which will keep Samsung’s accounts flowing with funds to support the development of its flagship series. We must say – Samsung has done a great job is designing the Galaxy J-series 2017.
The mid-range line-up of Samsung’s smartphone portfolio has been the same since 2013, all of them carrying the same design language of the Galaxy S3. For this year, the J-series gets its inspiration from last year’s Galaxy S7 in terms of design. All three smartphones – the Galaxy J3 2017, Galaxy J5 2017 and Galaxy J7 2017, are made of metal. The rear panel ditches the square lens housing and goes for a Moto G inspired vertical camera housing on all three models.
The J5 and J7 also get a uniquely shaped antenna band on the rear, which is a first on a Samsung device and any other smartphone. These two also get fingerprint sensor mounted on the Home button. The J7 2017 exclusively gets a USB Type-C port, which is a rarity in the mid-range segment. All the three models run Android 7.0 Nougat with Samsung’s latest custom TouchWiz UI on top. The three models also see the return of Samsung’s coveted AMOLED display on the J-series.
The Galaxy J3 2017 has a 5-inch 1280x720p
display. It gets the octa-core Exynos 7570 chipset clocked at 1.4GHz along with 2GB of RAM and 16GB of onboard storage. There’s a 13MP rear camera and a 5MP front camera, powered by a 2400mAh battery. It is priced in Europe at approximately Rs 16,000.
The Galaxy J5 2017 has a slightly bigger 5.2-inch 1980x1080p display. It uses an octa-core Exynos 7870 chipset clocked at 1.6GHz along with 2GB of RAM and 16GB of storage. There’s a 13MP rear camera and a 5MP front camera, powered by a 3000mAh battery. It is priced in Europe at approximately Rs 20,000.
The flagship of the J-series – the J7 2017, has a 5.5-inch 1980x1080p display powered by the octa-core Exynos 77870 chipset clocked at 1.6GHz. The J7 2017 gets a higher 3GB RAM but the same old 16GB onboard storage from the last year’s model. However, it has 13MP rear as well as front camera and packs a bigger 3600mAh battery. The phone also gains IP54 certification for splash resistance. This one is priced at Rs 24,700 in Europe.
It will be interesting to see Samsung’s pricing strategy for the Indian market when it arrives here sometime later. The competition in India offers similar, if not, better specifications for a much lesser price.
