A 65-year-old man sleeping under a parked truck in Chembur died after the driver started the vehicle and ran over him. The incident came to light only on Sunday evening when some local residents discovered him lying unconscious.
The RCF police, who were contacted by residents and took the victim to hospital, have registered a case against an unidentified truck driver and are investigating the matter.
The incident took place some time between 8pm on Saturday and 6pm on Sunday near LU Gadkari Marg, near Datta mandir, the police said.
The deceased, identified as Yakub Waseem Shaikh, was a truck cleaner. “The driver may not have noticed him sleeping under the vehicle and may
have driven away fast,” said a police official, requesting anonymity.
Shrikant Desai, senior police inspector, RCF police station, said a case has been registered under sections 279 (rash driving) and 304(A) (causing death by negligence) of the Indian Penal Code and relevant sections of the Motor Vehicles Act. “We are investigating the matter and are in search of the driver who fled from the spot,” he said.
Police officials said other drivers in the area said a truck carrying tar was parked on the road. “We are also looking at CCTV footage and have started searching for the accused. We have found that the accused has gone to Hyderabad and are trying to track him down,” the official said.
