A class 9 student attempted suicide on Friday after she was gang-raped in Bihar's Lakhisarai district. The incident triggered mob violence as the victim jumped from a building and landed on high voltage wire, police said.
According to Lakhisarai Superintendent of Police Kartikey Sharma, the girl was battling for life after jumping from the roof of a three-storey building in Chitranjan, where she was raped after being intoxicated.
The girl along with one of her friends had gone 'pandal' hopping on Durga Navami on Thursday, Sharma said, adding it was not clear how she reached the third floor of the building.
The victim was recovered in half-naked condition and was possibly forced to consume liquor before being raped, he
said.
The police suspect that she must have jumped from the building after gaining consciousness.
The police are waiting to register her statement as she remains unconscious.
The girl’s friend, the building owner and another suspect have been detained in the case, the police officer said.
Some of the victim's clothes, liquor bottles and glasses from the roof of the building have also been recovered by the police.
Violent protests were witnessed in the area following the incident. Hundreds of people blocked roads and ransacked public property demanding immediate police action.
Additional security forces have been deployed in the area to control the situation.
