Hyderabad: Two gangs of cricket bookies, who were trying to cash in on the exciting T20 Tri Series final match between India and Bangladesh on Sunday, were nabbed during raids conducted by the North Zone Task Force along with the local police in Abid Road and Kulsumpura areas. Four persons were arrested and Rs 7.7 lakh was seized from them.
In the first case, MS Associates Furniture in Abid Road was raided and the store owner Suresh Kumar Vyas was arrested, while the others arrested were Pawan Agarwal, a trader and Santosh Kumar Varma, a collection agent. In the second case, police raided a house at Jiyaguda in Kulsumpura and arrested N Lakhan, a bookie.
According to the police, Vyas collected bets amount from sub-bookies
Agarwal and Varma and paid Ajay and Altaf, both main bookies. He collected the cricket betting line from them on a commission basis. Lakhan, who is from Kulsumpura, also was organizing cricket betting and shared the betting amount with Dharam Singh, a cricket bookie from Mangalhat, who is now absconding.
“The suspects set up a TV and set top box, live line cell numbers. They accepted bets directly and indirectly over phone calls and WhatsApp,” police said.
The gangs were organizing bets during the India-Bangladesh match at Colombo and were nabbed during the match late on Sunday night.
The suspects along with the seized material were handed over to the Abid Road and Kulsumpura police for further probe.
