The Rajiv Gandhi International Airport (RGIA) police on Tuesday arrested a 52-year-old person who attempted leave the airport carrying Rs 26 lakh cash posing as a Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) officer.
According to the police, the suspect, M Nageshwar Rao, was a native of Kothavantena centre in Vijayawada, Andhra Pradesh. On Tuesday, Rao was found by Income Tax Officer, Air Intelligence Unit, carrying a bag containing Rs 26 lakh cash. On being inquired, he introduced himself as a CBI officer.
“Rao said he was with CBI and holds Deputy Chief Investigation Officer Rank,” said P V Padmaja, DCP (Cyberabad), adding that he was
a carrying an ID card as well. On checking with the CBI, it was found that Rao was an impersonator. He worked as an accounts officer in a private firm in Vijayawada but he was sacked on health grounds.
“In order to earn money, he created a fake ID card and got acquainted with officials from the Panchayat Raj Department in AP,” the DCP said, adding that the money he was carrying was part of an official work.
He flew out of Vijayawada in an Air India flight and landed here on Tuesday morning. Police seized the cash from him and produced before the court and after which he was remanded in judicial custody.
