A passenger was booked and gold worth Rs 1 crore was recovered from him at Pune International Airport on Wednesday.
Customs officers at the airport were suspicious of Saifula Nasar Dudgave, who had arrived from Abu Dhabi by Jet Airways Flight no 9W-513, after he was spotted trying to hastily clear himself through the Green Channel.
They noticed his suspicious movements and he was asked to come aside and his baggage was thoroughly scanned.
Initially, nothing was found. But after seeing that he was growing tense, the customs officials decided to re-examine his
hand and check-in luggage.
While going through two tin boxes, officials found one sewing machine and a cloth iron.
One metallic box that contained the sewing machine was dismantled and to the officer's surprise they recovered 4.37 kgs of 18-carat gold valued at Rs 97,07,818.
Saifulla Dudgave was booked under smuggling charges and the customs team were investigating the matter with the possibility of exposing other people who were involved in helping the accuse, said Bharat Nawale the deputy Commissioner of Customs. Dudgave hails from Kolhapur.
