Gurugram: A retired banker has filed a complaint with police claiming that he was cheated of Rs 35 lakh by a woman, whom he befriended on Facebook. The woman introduced herself as Jenny Anderson from London and claimed to have owned a jewellery shop. In a bid to rescue her from immigration officials at Mumbai airport, the man not only gave away Rs 13 lakh of his savings but also took a loan of Rs 22 lakh from private lenders. However, he later realised that his Facebook girlfriend conned him.

It all started on May 19 when the victim, a bachelor, received a friend request from the woman on Facebook. He accepted it, and the exchange of WhatsApp numbers was followed. Soon they started chatting on the messaging app. On May 29, Jenny informed him that she was coming to India and would stay in Delhi for a week. Jenny said she would land in Mumbai on June 1 and then take a connecting flight to Delhi. She told the man that she was coming to India to meet him, apart from buying jewellery for

her showroom.

On June 1, he received a call from a woman, who introduced herself as Pooja from the immigration department at Mumbai airport. She said Jenny was not allowed to take a flight to Delhi because she was carrying foreign currency (British pound) worth Rs 68 lakh without valid documents, and second, she did not have a health certificate. Pooja then handed the phone to Jenny, who started crying and requested him to pay the fine for her offence.

Over the next few days, the man received several calls from Pooja, and another man claimed to be Kumar Sen from the Delhi airport authority asking him to pay the fine. They also threatened him to file a case. The retired banker eventually deposited Rs 35 lakh to different bank account numbers provided by Jenny between June 1 and June 15. But Jenny never came to visit him. He tried everything to contact her, but all his efforts went in vain. Finally, he filed a complaint at DLF 1 police station earlier this week.
