Three gold capsules weighing 724 gm seized at Shamshabad airport

Hyderabad: A passenger, trying to smuggle gold concealed in the form of capsules in his rectum, was caught at Rajiv Gandhi International Airport by Directorate of Revenue Intelligence (DRI) sleuths. Three gold capsules weighing 724 gm worth Rs 27.87 lakh were seized.

According to the DRI officials, the passenger took a domestic flight from Mumbai to Hyderabad on Friday when officials stopped him based on inputs gathered by the agency.

He was made to undergo a body scan and officials spotted three capsules in his rectum. “The elliptical-shaped capsules of gold were wrapped by black adhesive tape. Apparently, the flyer wanted



to hoodwink the officials and pass the security checks, but failed,” the officials said.

The officials after removing the gold capsules took the help of a goldsmith to carefully remove the adhesive tape pasted on it. “Along with the tape, the contraband weight 832 gm. Later, we found that the gold weighed around 724 gm,” they said.

The passenger confessed that the gold was smuggled into the country and given to him by a friend in Mumbai. He was to bring it to Hyderabad and hand it over to someone. As he did not have any documents, gold was seized and flyer arrested.
