In Tamil Nadu, unidentified robbers have stolen soiled currency notes worth Rs 5.78 crore belonging to a few public sector banks from a train while transferring from Salem to Chennai.
The soiled and damaged currencies worth Rs 342 crore have been sent to the Reserve Bank of India branch in Chennai by the Salem-Chennai Express yesterday in a consignment.
However, the railway police in Chennai said when the train reached the Chennai Egmore
station yesterday morning, it was found that a hole has been made on the roof of the railway coach carrying the money, enough for a person to enter in.
When the consignment was opened, wads of currencies were found lying scattered and four of the boxes in the consignment broken. A special team of railway police has been formed to investigate the case and all the police stations en route have been alerted to gather information on the robbery case.
