The Hyderabad Task Force on Friday arrested a transgender woman and her accomplice on charges of targeting people in the guise of asking for a lift and snatching their gold ornaments and other valuables.
Police recovered 40 grams gold, a laptop and three mobile phones from them. The arrested persons were Anjum (39) and Basavaraju (25), both natives of Bengaluru and residing in a lodge at Secunderabad. While Anjum snatched gold chains from people, Basavaraju disposed of the stolen material and shared it. They were involved in cases in Mahankali and Punjagutta, police said.
According to the police, Anjum was doing odd jobs in Bengaluru and met Basavaraju recently.
“Anjum waited on busy roads asking for a lift from men. On the way, she
would make sexual advances towards them and when they resisted, she threatened, attacked and snatched their gold ornaments,” police said, adding that she then jumped off the moving vehicle and escaped.
In the city, they targeted a motorist at CTO junction in Secunderabad and snatched his gold chain, laptop and fled from the car. In the second, with the same modus operandi, she targeted a cop from the City Police in the guise of asking for a lift on his bike and snatched his gold chain at Punjagutta.
“To detect the snatching case of Mahankali police station, a special team was formed and examined CCTV footage. The suspects were identified and nabbed,” police said.
The two were handed over to the Mahankali police for further action.
