Two Ola cab drivers
kidnapped a 12-year-old homeless girl, raped and murdered her and threw her
body into a canal from a flyover late on Tuesday night. The victim’s body was
discovered early Wednesday morning.
Shankar Shaw and Guddu Singh, both in their early 30s, confessed to picking up the minor girl from a pavement at Brabourne Road in the central business district. The police arrested Shaw and Singh on Wednesday morning.
The suspects told the
police that after a bout of heavy drinking, they were “looking for some fun”
and decided to abduct the girl.“After taking turns to rape the girl inside the
car, they strangled her and threw her body into a canal below the
newly built Park
Circus flyover,” a senior police officer said.
The accused were arrested after receiving information that a girl was forced into an Ola car with its trademark lime-green bumpers.
“The car sped away towards southern Kolkata from the central business district. The traffic CCTV cameras helped us track down the culprits,” the officer said. Before forcing the girl into the car, Shaw and Singh had a few drinks at Watgunge in the city’s port area and as they were speeding through the central business district, they spotted the girl sleeping on the footpath. The victim lived on the pavement with her mother who works as a maid at a local sweet shop.
