Dundigal police on Thursday arrested two persons on charges of attempting to rape a woman.
According to the police, the suspects were identified as Mohammed Sohail (26), a vegetable vendor and Joginder Paul Singh (39), a private employee, both residents of RC Puram.
The 28-year-old victim, in her complaint said she along with her friend, had come to the city in search of a job. On Wednesday night, they were on their way to the friend’s parents’ residence in Miyapur, when they stopped near Bowrampet X roads in a forest area where Joginder and Sohail allegedly intercepted them and attempted to assault the woman.
“They threatened them and physically assaulted the victim’s friend. When he became unconscious, they dragged
the victim into bushes and attempted to assault her,” police said.
The victim was saved by one Janga Reddy who was passing by Reddy, who was on his way to the police station to collect his stolen mobile phone, heard her cries and alerted the cops who rushed to the spot and rescued the woman. While Sohail managed to flee from the police, Joginder was nabbed. Sohail was later nabbed on city outskirts on Thursday.
A case under sections pertaining to rape, kidnap, wrongful confinement, causing hurt and other sections of the Prevention of Atrocities against SC&ST Act too was registered and the duo was remanded in judicial custody on Thursday. The woman was sent for a medical examination as well as part of the investigation.
