Have you been looked down at by your mom, for speaking endlessly at home? Or are you the one who can talk to yourself for hours, even when nobody is around? (not literally, though). Well, if that's the case, then you better get happy for we're living in an era where such skills are increasingly in demand. Communication skills are ranked first in the 'must-have' skills and qualities for a job interview.
There are a number of jobs these days that require the applicants to have excellent communication skills:
Broadcast Journalist
"Live from the middle of nowhere, with camera operator Mogambo, ABCXYZ News" (All names in this announcement are fictional, and any resemblance to anyone is purely fictional).
We've all seen these updates on news channels where the announcer takes us to their "Samvaddata" for the recent takes on any happenings across the country. Now being a broadcast journalist means that you have no script and no teleprompter, and unless you are psychic, you also have no way to predict the turn events will take. So you have to cook up your news on the spot and need to get the facts right too. And all this requires some seriously impressive communication skills. Tadaang!
Teacher
Being a teacher isn't all about knowing it all about your specific subject. It is about how you communicate all that you know. As Albert Einstein said - "If you can't explain it simply, you do not understand it well enough". Communication skills play a significant role in being a teacher. You need to be able to comprehend your pupils and then mold your thoughts in such a way that they are easily understood. Also, pupils aren't the only ones that a teacher has to communicate with; there is the entire school administration, the heads of departments, and parents too. Blimey!
Radio Jockey (RJ)
A silhouette of thoughts, adorned by words is what you require to be a radio jockey. On the radio, no one cares how you look or how much you have studied and how many degrees you have. All that
matters here is that you are a person who is fun to listen to. So, what is it that you need? You guessed it right! (No prizes for guessing, though). Communication skills are needed to create an interesting dialogue, sometimes an interesting monologue too!
Publicist
A glamorous little career option, publicists are the people who work for big names and celebrities and generate positive press and media exposure for their famous clients to ensure that their public reputations remain untarnished. Media is often termed as a 'cruel friend', a celebrity publicist, therefore must know how to network and deal with the media people. Dare to mess! (*Winks) Diplomatic communication skills and strong interpersonal skills are of prime importance when it comes to being a publicist.
Lawyers
Why are some hundred thousand cases still pending in courts? Is it the inability to put-forth ideas effectively? Jokes apart! While the practice of Law may be described as conceptual, the lawyer's ability to earn a living depends on his skills in being able to get his point across. In practice, being a lawyer regularly requires dealing with other people, with clients and peers to law enforcement officers and businesses and judges. If Lawyers fail to communicate their opinions, would there ever be any answer to our problems?
Marketing Managers
People with fluent communication skills can easily build a career in marketing. All they need to do is understand how to relate to others, and have the power of persuasion for their clients. When you are in a managerial role, coordinating and instructing (primarily managing) an entire team does require excellent communication skills. Marketing managers deal directly with people almost on a daily basis, and so require a high level of social and communication skills.
The importance of having soft skills has increased now. Especially with the #SkillIndia campaign, one can see that we are on the right track to further development. And the best part of improving your communication skills is that it's never too late.
