After the implementation of CAA, protests have erupted in various parts of India. On Tuesday, the All Assam Students Union (AASU) has organized a Mashal March in Guwahati after filing a petition against CAA in the Supreme Court.
Samujjal Bhattacharya, Advisor of AASU, while speaking with India Today, stated, "CAA is unconstitutional, anti North-East, and an anti-indigenous act."
The Assam Accord was signed in 1985 during the Congress Rajiv Gandhi Government after five years of violent protests in Assam. According to AASU and 30 other organizations protesting against CAA,
this violates the Assam Accord.
"Today, we filed our first position challenging CAA. We have full faith in the law, and we will protest peacefully," said Samujjal Bhattacharya.
"Assam is not a dumping ground for immigrants. We want to live as good citizens like other parts of the country," added the AASU advisor.
Utpal Sarma, President of AASU, also criticized the central government. "We have always led the front against CAA. Today, in the apex court, we requested a stay on CAA. We have already borne the illegal burden of immigrants in Assam," Sarma said.
