The Central Board of Secondary Education (CBSE) is planning to introduce a two-level structure for Science and Social Science in Classes 9 and 10, following the model already in place for Class 10 Mathematics. This proposal was discussed in a recent meeting of CBSE's curriculum committee and awaits final approval from the Board's governing body.
Following the introduction of two levels for Class 10 Mathematics—Standard and Basic—CBSE aims to offer Science and Social Science at two levels (Standard and Advanced) starting from the 2026-27 academic session. This initiative aims to allow students to choose a level suited to their aptitude and learning needs.
The framework for this dual-level structure is still under development. It is yet to be decided whether students opting for the advanced level will follow separate study materials or face only differences in the examination pattern.
The National Council of Educational Research and Training (NCERT), which is responsible for textbook development, will play a critical
role in these changes.
The NCERT has already rolled out updated textbooks for Classes 1, 2, 3, and 6 as part of its alignment with the National Curriculum Framework (NCF). Textbooks for other classes are expected to be released by early 2025. These updates align with the goals of the National Education Policy (NEP) 2020, which emphasises reducing student stress and discouraging reliance on coaching by offering subjects at multiple levels of difficulty.
According to sources, CBSE has conducted several rounds of consultations regarding the two-level system for additional subjects. However, the proposal must first be approved by the Board's governing body before implementation. Another key challenge is ensuring that textbooks and curricula are adjusted to accommodate this new system, a responsibility that lies with the NCERT.
This initiative underscores CBSE's commitment to aligning with NEP 2020’s vision of flexible, student-centred education, paving the way for a more adaptive and inclusive learning environment.
