The Delhi government has launched the “Maa Yamuna Swachhta Abhiyan” in schools across the capital, aiming to raise awareness about the importance of cleaning and preserving the Yamuna River. Chief Minister Rekha Gupta emphasised that the initiative seeks to instil a sense of responsibility in students towards environmental conservation, specifically focusing on the river that holds cultural significance.

Officials stated that the primary goal of the campaign is to sensitise young minds to the critical issue of the Yamuna’s pollution and to connect them with the national cleanliness movement.

"The cleaning of the Yamuna is a matter that concerns us deeply. Through this school programme, we want to send a strong message to children that the health of the river is crucial to us all," the Chief Minister said.

Water Minister Parvesh Verma supported the campaign, highlighting that the river is not just a

natural resource but the lifeline of Delhi.

He mentioned that inspired by Prime Minister Modi’s Swachhata Abhiyan, the “Maa Yamuna Swachhta Abhiyan” seeks to involve children in environmental conservation. “If we educate children about rivers and nature, they will grow into responsible citizens who will contribute to a cleaner, greener India,” Verma added.

The campaign will feature various activities, including essay writing and painting competitions, awareness walks, and cultural events. Additionally, the Delhi Jal Board, in partnership with the Directorate of Education, will provide schools with necessary resources, including educational materials and awareness kits, to aid in spreading the message of cleanliness and river conservation.

Through this initiative, the Delhi government hopes to empower the next generation to actively participate in the preservation of the Yamuna and the environment at large.
