Following a cold wave in the city, the winter break has been extended in private schools in Delhi till January 15, according to a circular from the Delhi government's Directorate of Education.
After the holiday break, private schools were expected to resume classes on January 9.
"In continuation to the DOE's (Directorate of Education) earlier circular, all private schools of Delhi are advised to remain close till January 15, 2023, in the wake of cold wave prevailing in Delhi," the circular read.
The minimum temperature at the Safdarjung Observatory, the city's main weather station, dropped to a bone-chilling 1.9 degrees Celsius on Sunday due to a severe cold wave, the coldest January temperature in two years.
The movement of road, rail, and air
traffic was hampered by the blinding blanket of dense fog that engulfed northwest India and the neighbouring central and eastern regions of the country.
The minimum temperature recorded on Saturday at the Safdarjung observatory was 2.2 degrees Celsius, which was colder than most of Himachal Pradesh, most of Uttarakhand, and certain hill stations in Jammu and Kashmir.
When the minimum temperature falls below 2 degrees Celsius or the deviation from the average exceeds 6.4 notches, a severe cold wave is in effect.
When the maximum temperature is at least 4.5 degrees below normal and the minimum temperature is at least 10 degrees Celsius below normal, the day is considered cold. When the high temperature is at least 6.5 degrees below average, it is considered to be a severe cold day.
