The Directorate of Education (DoE) has announced that all government and private schools located in areas adjacent to the Yamuna River will be closed on July 17 and 18. This decision comes in light of the recent flooding caused by heavy rainfall in the upper catchment areas, leading to the Yamuna breaching its banks and necessitating the evacuation of residents from low-lying regions.
Due to ongoing flood relief operations in schools along the Yamuna river, the DoE has mandated the closure of all schools in the affected districts, namely East, North East, North West-A, North, Central, and South East, for students on July 17 and 18. However, flood-affected schools have been advised to organise online classes during
this period.
On the other hand, schools in the remaining districts of the DoE, namely North West-B, West-A, West-B, South, South West-A, South West-B, and New Delhi, will remain open. The heads of schools in these districts have the flexibility to conduct classes in physical or hybrid mode (offline or online) at the convenience of the students. They are required to inform parents about their decision well in advance.
The DoE has further stated that starting from Wednesday onwards, all schools in every district will resume normal functioning. As of Sunday, the water level in the Yamuna River has receded to 205.98 meters, a decrease from its peak of 208.66 meters recorded on Thursday at 8 pm news.
