IIT-Hyderabad struggles to attract top rankers in JEE

In a significant concern for the Indian Institute of Technology (IIT) Hyderabad, none of the top 200 rankers in the Joint Entrance Examination (JEE) Advanced have chosen to enroll in this premier institute for the academic year 2024-25.

Only three of the top 500 candidates and 41 out of top 1,000 rankers opted for the IIT-Hyderabad, reflecting the institution’s inability in attracting top rankers in the JEE Advanced, one of the toughest entrance tests in the country. This alarming trend has been revealed in the Joint Implementation Committee report published by the IIT-Madras that conducted the JEE Advanced 2024.

In contrast, the IIT-Bombay continued to solidify its reputation as the top pick for the rankers, with an overwhelming 47 out of top 50 rankers opting the institution during the academic year 2024-25. Further, 72 out of top 100, 100 out of top 200 and 179 out of top 500 and 246 out of top 1,000 rankers have chosen the IIT-Bombay. Most of the toppers have opted for a career in computer science and engineering at the IIT-Bombay.

After the IIT-Bombay, the IIT-Delhi



was the only premier institution that attracted two out of top 50 rankers in the JEE Advanced. Similarly, 23 out of top 100, 50 out of top 200, 109 out of top 500 and 204 out of top 1,000 rankers opted for the IIT-Bombay.

The IIT-Madras, which organised the test, could attract only two of the top 100 rankers.

For the academic year 2024, a total of 17,760 seats, including 3.566 female supernumerary seats available only for female candidates, were up for grabs through the Joint Seat Allocation Authority counselling. In the fifth (final) round of allotment, 17,695 seats were allotted to the candidates.

Interestingly, according to the report, the IIT-Hyderabad, which failed to attract JEE Advanced top rankers, could successfully fill up all its seats. While there were 595 seats, 597 seats including supernumerary seats were filled. Of these 476 are boys and 120 were girls.

The IIT Kharagpur had the highest number of admissions with 1,915 students, followed by IIT Varanasi with 1,572, IIT Bombay with 1,371 and IIT Roorkee with 1,351 seats being filled up.
