Suresh Kumar, Education Minister, Karnataka, on Thursday, said that the students of Classes 7 and 8 will be promoted to the higher class without annual examinations in accordance with the COVID-19 lockdown. He said that the Government of Karnataka has decided so due to lockdown implemented in the country as a result of which the authorities are not able to conduct he annual examinations and the education system in the state needs to be up-paced. The students of Class 9, on the other hand, said Kumar, will not be promoted automatically. They will, instead, be judged on the formative and summative assessment during their class tests based on which they will be promoted.

The Government of Karnataka is also yet to take a decision on conducting the higher examinations such as SSLC, Inter 1st year PUC



and 2nd PUC 2020 exams. The decision regarding conducting the Board examinations for Classes 10 and 12 will be taken only after 14th April 2020, i.e. when the lockdown period is over.

The decision to promote students of Classes 1 through 6 without annual exams in the state of Karnataka was taken by he concerned authorities on 13th March 2020 and the decision has now been extended to students of Classes 7 and 8 as well. Kumar said that earlier it was decided that there would be a common evaluation examination students of 7th and 8th standard but the plan cannot be materialized given the present circumstances. In case of students of Class 9, they had already been given a formative and summative assessment in class earlier which will be utilized as base in order for their promotion to higher class.
