The Kerala curriculum steering committee held a meeting and suggested the inclusion of portions "deleted" by the National Council of Educational Research and Training (NCERT). The state government on Wednesday wrote to Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Union Education Minister Dharmendra Pradhan regarding teaching the deleted portions in Kerala schools.
Kerala Education Minister V Sivankutty said the curriculum committee had unanimously decided to include the deleted portions.
“Yesterday, the curriculum committee met and took the decision and I have been authorised to discuss the matter with the chief minister and government,” he said.
“This is something that the curriculum committee cannot decide alone. So, we have discussed with CM and government to take a final decision,” he
added.
As part of an agreement with NCERT, 44 of their books are taught in Kerala for Classes 11 and 12. Experts said the deleted portions should be taught in the state.
Speaking about BJP playing vote-bank politics, he said, “How can talking about Mahatma Gandhi’s assassination be politics? They are changing history.”
“The academic matters of Kerala’s general education department are decided by the State Council of Educational Research and Training (SCERT) and the curriculum committee,” Sivankutty said.
NCERT had excluded Mughal history, Gujarat riots and Darwin's theory of evolution from school text books.
The curriculum committee has criticised the NCERT for omitting portions on freedom fighters, riots and RSS ban from the textbook, a report said.
