The Manipur government on Thursday said that all schools-- government, government-aided, or private-- will reopen from Friday, October 6.
The state government had ordered the closure of schools in the state on September 27 and September 29 after a fresh bout of protests was seen in the capital city of Imphal.
Schools were shut in Manipur after ethnic clashes erupted in the northeastern state on May 3. After remaining shut for over a couple of months due to the violence, schools were reopened across Manipur in July.
Meanwhile, fresh violence broke out in
Imphal West district on Thursday where at least two houses were set on fire and several rounds of bullets were fired.
Over 175 people have been killed and several hundreds injured since ethnic clashes broke out in Manipur, when a ‘Tribal Solidarity March’ was organised in the hill districts to protest against the majority Meitei community’s demand for Scheduled Tribe status.
Meiteis account for about 53 per cent of Manipur’s population and live mostly in the Imphal valley, while tribals, including Nagas and Kukis, constitute 40 per cent and reside mostly in the hill districts.
