In a groundbreaking move, the National Council of Educational Research and Training (NCERT) has been elevated to a 'Deemed University' status. The announcement was made by Union Education Minister Dharmendra Pradhan on the 63rd foundation day of the NCERT.
NCERT, the top-tier organisation catering to school education in the nation, has been central in undertaking diverse ventures and initiatives, inclusive of educational research and innovation, curriculum development, as well as the formation of study material and teaching-learning assets.
The council's significant functions and range of operations have now further been expanded upon, thanks to its new status as a deemed university.
This monumental decision comes in line with the council's established reputation and undeniable contribution to the field of school education. By transforming NCERT into a deemed university, the council's capacity to seal its steadfast commitment to providing quality education is expected to amplify
manifold.
In his address during the 63rd foundation day of the NCERT, Dharmendra Pradhan, the Union Education Minister said, "NCERT has been playing a significant role in the field of education. However, we felt the need to expand its role for better quality and innovation. This is why we have accorded it the status of a deemed university."
Pradhan also emphasised developing content in mother tongue. He suggested setting up Augmented Reality, Virtual Reality and Artificial Intelligence labs in all seven regional centres of NCERT.
"To make India the global hub of research and innovation these centres should be equipped with the latest technologies from around the world with future-ready infrastructure," he added. He also urged NCERT to standardise the teachers’ training curriculum to NCERT in its ECCE.
All told, the assessment reflects the council's ascendant role in shaping India's education standards and programmes, making it likely to usher in a new era of educational excellence and unflagging commitment to student welfare.
