India's National Council of Educational Research and Training (NCERT) has initiated a significant overhaul in school education. A 35-member committee, chaired by Michel Danino, has been established under the National Syllabus and Teaching Learning Material Committee (NSTC).
This committee is dedicated to reshaping the Social Science syllabus for Classes 6 to 12.
The committee comprises influential members like Sanjeev Sanyal, Banabina Brahma, MD Srinivas, and others from diverse educational and research
backgrounds.
Tasked with developing syllabi and teaching materials for history, geography, political science, sociology, and psychology, the committee aligns its goals with the National Curriculum Framework (NCF) for school education.
The primary objective of the initiative is to bring the school curriculum in line with the National Education Policy (NEP) of 2020.
Emphasising continuity across grades, interdisciplinary connections, and the integration of cross-cutting themes in social sciences, the committee aims to submit teacher handbooks by February 25, 2024.
