A total of 50 new medical colleges have received approval from the National Medical Commission (NMC), leading to the addition of 8,195 seats. As a result, the total count of MBBS seats in the country has surpassed 1,07,658.
On the issue of medical colleges being de-recognised for compliance-related issues, official sources said, “The health ministry has received 6 appeals from medical colleges. 20 colleges out of 50 that faced derecognition threats have appealed to the National Medical Commission. 102 medical colleges were issued show cause notices showing-non compliance.”
Further, 5 to 6 colleges have filed a second appeal in
the health minister’s office. “The medical seats in these colleges are reduced from that total count pending inquiry. These include colleges in Maharashtra, Punjab, Gujarat and other states,” they said.
According to sources, the approval for the establishment of 50 medical colleges has been granted in multiple states across India, including Telangana, Rajasthan, Tamil Nadu, Odisha, Nagaland, Maharashtra, Assam, Karnataka, Gujarat, Haryana, Jammu and Kashmir, West Bengal, Uttar Pradesh, and Madhya Pradesh.
Based on government data, there has been a substantial increase in the number of medical colleges in the country since 2014.
