No 'meat' in AMU: Here's why students are worried after crackdown on illegal slaughterhouses in UP

The crackdown on illegal slaughterhouses in Uttar Pradesh has hit the menu in canteens of Aligarh Muslim University hostels. Over 1000s of students living in AMU hostels have been directly hit by the crackdown because of unavailability of buffalo meat. AIMIM leader Asaduddin Owasi had highlighted this issue in a tweet on March 27 saying, “15,000 residential students in Aligarh Muslim University have not been served meat(buffalo) since yesterday & BJP says we r not targeting?.”

Earlier, the students were served at least one meal of ‘meat’ every day. However, the crackdown on slaughterhouses have forced the authorities to switch to other options like chicken, fish and vegetables. The students now fear this will increase their dining fee and affect those coming from financially backward classes.

Hasan, an AMU student, expressed this concern . He said the students haven’t been served “meat dishes” for the last 6-7 days. “The biggest problem in this is that it may lead to an increase in dining charges. Chicken prices have gone up from Rs 120 to 220 per kilogram, vegetable prices have also increased,” he said, adding, “Students from middle and lower-middle classes may suffer due to this.”

The students’ body of AMU have also written to Vice-Chancellor Zameer Uddin Shah to sort out the crisis in a meeting today. Hasan aslo said that the students are planning to write a letter to Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath.

In his response to the students, Shah reportedly told students that he cannot arrange 500kg of meat every day after the closure of slaughterhouses.
