On Tuesday, the Indian Parliament passed a significant bill that entrusts the President with the management accountability of the Indian Institutes of Management (IIMs).
The President will now serve as the Visitor to these premier B-schools, wielding the power to audit their functioning and appoint or remove directors.
The Rajya Sabha cleared the Indian Institutes of Management (Amendment) Bill, 2023, by a voice vote. This bill aims to bolster the governance and oversight of these prestigious
institutions while preserving their academic autonomy.
The Lok Sabha had previously approved the bill on August 4.
In response to a debate on the bill in the Rajya Sabha, Education Minister Dharmendra Pradhan clarified that the government has no intention of usurping the academic accountability from the institutes.
Instead, the bill seeks to ensure their management accountability. He also highlighted that the Centre has invested more than Rs 6,000 crore in establishing the IIMs.
