The Supreme Court on Friday issued a notice on batch of pleas filed by medical students in Ukraine seeking to be allowed to continue their studies in India.
The petition has sought to issue directions upon the Centre to issue necessary directions under the National Medical Commission Act to the Commission to frame guidelines and SOPs in this regard.
Earlier this year, the top court asked NMC to chalk out some measures to help these students to complete their courses and training. But the NMC failed to do so. However, it stated that accommodating them in Indian colleges was not possible.
Senior advocate R Basant appearing before a bench headed by Justice Hemant
Kumar Gupta, argued for the students and urged the Centre to take some stand for these students.
At this, Justice Gupta said, "There are 20,000 students. Does India have the capacity to accommodate these students?"
Senior advocate Basant said, "We have gone to Ukraine because we could not get admissions in government seats in India. We are not outsiders. And this is a fact that we can't go back to Ukraine in the present circumstances and our career is at stake. We are all final year students."
At this, Justice Gupta said, "But the Government of India has framed a policy with respect to students who have completed their course form China to complete internship in India."
