Churachandpur, a bustling district in Manipur, came to an unprecedented halt on Thursday due to a 48-hour shutdown called by the Kuki Students Organisation (KSO).
The impact of the strike was profound, from deserted marketplaces to absent staff in government and private offices. Most notably, schools and colleges remained closed, according to officials.
Explaining the reason behind the strike, KSO Churachandpur branch secretary Minlal, stated that the shutdown was a form of protest against the deployment of additional police commandos in Moreh
town in Tengnoupal district, the scene of a sub-divisional police officer’s murder on October 31.
Furthermore, it was a stand against the gross injustices meted out towards the Kuki-Zo tribal communities.
Minlal accused the police forces of vandalising, looting, and burning Kuki-Zo residences and vehicles in Sinam village, located on the Indo-Myanmar road in the Tengnoupal district.
He also criticised the police's intrusive search and combing operations in Moreh, a town heavily populated by the Kuki-Zo tribal people.
