Students from classes 6 to 9 affiliated under WBBSE will be promoted without exams

The West Bengal Board of Secondary Education (WBBSE) has decided to promote students in classes 6 to 9 in its affiliated schools without any annual examination because of the Covid-19 pandemic. The decision was announced in a notification issued to the principals of all state-run and government-aided schools. The board has instructed teachers to revise the old syllabus completely in the interest of students before taking up new chapters whenever schools reopen.

Referring to the government’s decision not to hold the selection test for Madhyamik (Class 10) candidates next year, the board asked the schools to implement its latest



directive. “No selection test will be held for Class 10 students this year. However, the schools are requested to make their students ready for MP 2021 [board exams] by taking mock tests if required,” read the notification.

There is still no word or advisory from the state government about the possible date of reopening schools. Education Minister Partha Chatterjee recently said the government would take a call on the matter after the Covid-19 situation improves. Chatterjee added that as recommended by the syllabus committee, 30 per cent of the Madhyamik (Class 10) and Uchcha Madhyamik (Class 12) curricula would be curtailed.
