Students appearing for next year's Joint Entrance Examination (Main) for engineering will have to show their Aadhaar card as proof of identity. Minister of State for Human Resource Development Mahendra Nath Pandey said this in a written reply in the Lok Sabha yesterday.
He said, the decision to use the Aadhaar was taken by the Joint Apex Board, which oversees conduct of JEE (Main) exam. The decision aims to make use of Aadhaar number for the exam to prevent impersonation and ensure fair
practice.
However, students from the states of Assam, Meghalaya and Jammu and Kashmir can use other valid Government identity number like ration card or bank account instead of Aadhaar as Aadhaar coverage is low in these states.
The Central Board of Secondary Education, which conducts the exam, is also facilitating students who do not have Aadhaar, to enroll at the nearest enrolment centre and can use 28 digit code printed on the Aadhaar Enrolment slip for applying for JEE exam.
