The Central Board of Secondary Education (CBSE) has released a notification regarding choices for students who studied Basic or Standard Mathematics in Class 10. This year, CBSE is allowing students who studied Basic Mathematics to opt for Standard Mathematics as a subject for Class 11.

Previously, students who opted for Basic Mathematics were restricted to Applied Mathematics and could not pursue Standard Mathematics. However, schools must ensure that students have the necessary aptitude and capability to undertake the Standard Mathematics course.

"Students who offered Mathematics Basic (241) are also allowed to offer Mathematics Standard (041) n class 11. Before permitting Mathematics Standard (041) in class 11 to such students, the head of the institution/school should satisfy that the students are having the aptitude and ability to pursue Mathematics Standard (041) in class 11," read the

official notice released by CBSE.

Additionally, the notification urges students from the Class 10 batch of the 2024-25 academic session to make their subject choices thoughtfully, as CBSE will not entertain further changes once subjects are finalised in the LOC (List of Candidates).

In January 2019, CBSE implemented a two-tiered system for Mathematics in classes 11 and 12. Standard Mathematics was designed for students intending to pursue Mathematics (041) in Class 12, while Basic Mathematics was tailored for those not inclined to pursue Mathematics at an advanced level. Students who opted for Basic Mathematics (241) in Class 10 were restricted to studying Applied Mathematics in Class 11.

Previously, CBSE granted exemptions during the Covid-19 pandemic, allowing students who had chosen Basic Mathematics in Class 10 to enroll in Mathematics (041) for Classes 11 and 12.
