In a remarkable achievement, two Indian educators, Deep Narayan Nayak, a primary school teacher from West Bengal, and Hari Krishna Patacharu, an English teacher from Andhra Pradesh, have made it to the top 50 shortlist for the 2023 Global Teacher Prize. The Global Teacher Prize, a USD 1-million annual award, is organised by the
Varkey Foundation in partnership with UNESCO and in collaboration with the UAE-based philanthropic organisation Dubai Cares. This esteemed recognition aims to acknowledge educators who have displayed extraordinary dedication and innovation in their teaching practices.
The selection process for this year's prize was highly competitive, with over 7,000 nominations and applications pouring in from 130 different countries around the world. The finalists, including Nayak and Patacharu, represent a global pool of talent and expertise in the teaching profession.
