In a bid to honour the extraordinary courage and bravery that martyred security personnel have shown in the line of duty, the Human Resource Development (HRD) Ministry has decided that henceforth universities and educational institutions across the country will have a "wall of heroes" portraying the martyrs.
According to reports, the HRD on Monday, May 1, decided to launch the "Vidya, Veerta Abhiyan", campaign on Tuesday, April 2, to encourage educational institutions to display portraits of Param Veer Chakra-decorated soldiers.
"HRD Minister Prakash Javadekar will tomorrow launch portraits of Param Veer Chakra decorated-soldiers at an event and these portraits will be put up in various educational institutions," a senior HRD official told on Monday.
The official also added that to begin the campaign, the vice chancellors of Jawaharlal Nehru University, Delhi

University, Jamia Millia Islamia and Indian Institute of Technology, Delhi, will be receiving the portraits from the minister on Tuesday.

The idea to maintain a "wall of heroes" was first proposed by a group of ex-servicemen who had last year approached JNU vice-chancellor M Jagadesh Kumar, saying it would instil a sense of "nationalism" and "patriotism" among students. This proposal was made against the backdrop of a clash in the college where students had allegedly raised anti-national slogans.
Last year, the HRD had made it compulsory for every central university to fly the national flag on a 200-feet mast.
Officals had said last year that as flags signify a "strong India" it will instill a "sense of unity and integrity" among students. They had also added that the JNU is also expected to follow it since it is a Central University.
