Demanding the Telangana government immediately release pending scholarships, the University of Hyderabad (UoH) students organised a huge protest on the university campus here on Thursday.
Raising slogans against the State government, a large number of students led by the Students Union gathered at the campus north gate to burn an effigy. However, the police present there prevented the students and took away the effigy.
Students brought another effigy and burnt it on the campus as a mark of their protest against inordinate delay by the government in releasing scholarships.
“After knowing that students burnt effigy, the police came inside the campus and beat up some
students, resulting in injuries,” said Lenin, president SFI UoH unit.
Students lamented that inordinate delay in releasing scholarships was causing immense hardships to students from economically disadvantaged backgrounds, particularly those from BC, SC and ST categories. They said several attempts by the previous and present union members regarding release of scholarships did not yield positive results.
“BC category students have not received their scholarships for the three consecutive years, while the SC and ST students are waiting for two years. Students are struggling due to lack of scholarships and the government has not responded despite representing the issue several times,” Lenin added.
