The magnitude 7.8 earthquake, which struck southern Turkey, near the northern border of Syria early on February 6, has worsened the existing humanitarian catastrophe. The calamity that has created havoc in the country, has increased the death toll while leaving human existence shattered. Post the earthquake, scores of Bollywood celebrities took to their respective social media handles and expressed their grief.
For those unaware, three quakes struck one after the other in Turkey and Syria on February 6, leaving thousands of damaged buildings in its wake. The pre-dawn quake resulted in the death of at least 4,365 people in the two countries. Since the news broke on social media, scores of Bollywood stars mourned the tragic incident while requesting support from others.
Global icon Priyanka Chopra, who closely works for humanitarian causes, took to her Instagram stories and shared a news piece by a media portal and wrote, “Devastating” along with a broken heart emoticon.
Alia Bhatt also took to
her Instagram stories and shared an article by an organization about the earthquake being the most deadly. She captioned the story and wrote, “This is heartbreaking” along with a heartbroken emoticon.
Rajkummar Rao shared a post on his Instagram stories while praying for the people. “#Turkey #Syria you are in our prayers (sic).” Ananya Panday also sent her prayers to the people stuck and families on her Instagram stories. The actress did not caption the story, just added a folding hands emoticon along with a heartbroken emoticon.
India has dispatched the first batch of earthquake relief material to Turkey aboard an Indian Air Force (IAF) aircraft. The shipment included a search and rescue team from National Disaster Response Force (NDRF), highly-skilled dog squads, medical supplies, drilling equipment, and other crucial tools required for the aid efforts.
An IAF C-17 flight carrying national disaster response force (NDRF) personnel as well as relief materials reached Turkey earlier today.
