India might be producing maximum films in a year, but the nation is yet to win an Oscar in the Best International Films category. It was the 23rd year in a row that an Indian film was even nominated. This year, the Film Federation of India picked Kiran Rao-directed Laapataa Ladies as the official entry from the country.
However, it bowed out of the race as 15 shortlisted films were announced on Tuesday. The film's early exit led to a social media outcry, with celebrities like Hansal Mehta
and Ricky Kej even questioning the choice of cinema sent as the official entry.
A section of the industry and cinephiles continue to feel that Payal Kapadia’s All We Imagine as Light (AWIAL) had a better chance at international honours. The film, honoured with the Cannes Grand Prix, has even secured a nomination at the Golden Globes.
If you are also wondering how the FFI picked Laapataa Ladies and whether AWIAL had a chance, let's break down the process for you.
