The controversial film ‘72 Hoorain’ is set to have a special screening at Jawaharlal Nehru University (JNU), further adding to the already existing controversies surrounding it. JNU has a history of controversies whenever hard-hitting movies are screened on its premises, highlighting the polarizing nature of such films and the different reactions they generate. Despite this, the makers of ‘72 Hoorain’ have decided to take the risk and organize a screening at the university on Tuesday, July 4.
’72 Hoorain’ has already courted major controversies, including the fact that the film’s trailer was considered for a certificate by the Central Board of Film Certification (CBFC). Now, the film is all set to be screened in JNU. The makers will hold a special screening ahead of its release on July 4. The film will release in theatres on July 7. The makers of ‘72 Hoorain’ believe that the screening at JNU provides a significant opportunity
for Kashmiri Muslim and other students to voice their thoughts and reactions regarding a film that explores the harsh reality of terrorist camps.
However, some political parties from Kashmir have raised objections to the film, specifically concerning its portrayal of terrorist brainwashing. These parties argue that the movie's narrative might perpetuate negative stereotypes and distort the complex dynamics of the religion. They fear that the film could present an incomplete or distorted picture of their faith. Religious figure Maulana Sajid Rashid has also expressed objections to the film, accusing the makers of distorting religious teachings and disrespecting the core principles of the faith. However, during a discussion panel on the film, he did acknowledge that religion does promise certain rewards in the afterlife for men, such as 72 virgins, while women are said to lead the ‘Hoorain’ (the heavenly maidens) in heaven, as the movie depicts.
