A Mumbai court has issued a non-bailable warrant against filmmaker Ram Gopal Varma after rejecting his applications for bail and a stay on his conviction and sentence. Judge AA Kulkarni, while hearing Varma's appeal against a lower court's order on Tuesday, emphasised that Varma must be personally present to file further applications.
The sessions court has scheduled the next hearing for July 28 and has sought a report on the execution of the
warrant.
Varma was absent during the appeal hearing, but his advocate, Dujendra KH Sharma, represented him. The court initially granted an exemption for Varma’s absence. However, two subsequent applications filed by his lawyer--one seeking bail during the appeal process and another requesting a stay on his conviction and sentence--were rejected due to the filmmaker’s absence. The judge clarified that Varma could reapply for these requests if he appeared in person.
