Veteran filmmaker Yash Chopra redefined romance on the silver screen with films like Silsila, Dilwale Dulhaniya Le Jayenge, Darr, Chandni and Veer-Zaara, among others. In a career spanning five decades, the director-producer established himself as one of the most celebrated filmmakers, who made movies that depicted women as strong and conventional. To celebrate Yash Chopra and his illustrious career, actor Rani Mukerji launched a commemorative stamp honouring the legendary filmmaker’s 50 years of filmmaking at the Australian Parliament on Tuesday. The event, also attended by filmmaker Karan Johar. coincided with the opening ceremony of the 15th Indian Film Festival of Melbourne.
The evening, a celebration of Indian cinema on Australian parliamentary grounds, featured keynote speeches by Rani, who is married to Yash’s son Aditya Chopra, and Karan. However, the highlight was undoubtedly the unveiling of the Yash Chopra stamp,
a tribute to the filmmaker’s immense contribution to Indian cinema and its global impact. Interestingly, the late filmmaker was also the first patron of the Indian Film Festival of Melbourne and the festival has always had deep ties with him.
The ceremony was graced by esteemed dignitaries, including Australian parliamentarians, underscoring the global reach of Indian cinema. Karan, who also delivered a powerful speech, joined Rani in honouring Yash’s legacy.
“I am truly honored and humbled to be a part of this momentous occasion of the launch of legendary film-maker Yash Chopra’s commemorative stamp at the Australian Parliament House! This is not only a celebration of Yash Chopra and YRF’s rich and impactful 50-year-old legacy of shaping pop culture the world over but also of the Indian film industry that has entertained countless people through the power of cinema,” Rani said in her speech.
