Thalapathy Vijay’s ‘Leo’ has scripted history. The film, which was released in theatres on October 19, has become the highest-grossing opener worldwide for any Indian film. Yes, it has surpassed not just Rajinikanth’s ‘2.0’ in the Tamil industry, but also Shah Rukh Khan’s ‘Jawan’.
In an exclusive chat with IndiaToday.in, trade expert Ramesh Bala shared insight on the collection of ‘Leo’. He also spoke about expectations from the long weekend, given the film will benefit from the Dusshera holidays.
"It is the biggest opener in the Tamil industry. ‘Leo’ has done better than ‘Jailer’ and ‘Ponniyin Selvan’. The opening is very big, especially because of the overseas market. It hasn't created a record in Tamil Nadu because they didn't have the morning shows
at 4 am and 7 am. The first show was at 9 a.m. But, in other places like Karnataka and Kerala, it opened at 4 am. It also opened early reviews and premiers. They were doing it for like six weeks in the US and the UK. They had a longer time to book so it was already known that they would have all-time No.1 opening."
The action thriller has been released in multiple languages including Tamil, Telugu, Malayalam, Kannada, and Hindi. The film, which opened on October 19, has been getting mixed reviews. Talking about the number Ramesh said, "The film has collected Rs 75 crore in India, and if you include overseas, then about Rs 130 crore. It is a huge worldwide collection. The previous one was ‘2.0’ starring Rajnikanth. It was the No.1 worldwide grosser on opening day from Tamil industry, so ‘Leo’ has beaten it."
