Maharashtra Prisons Department to submit report on Sanjay Dutt's early release

The Maharashtra Prisons Department is set to submit a report to the Bombay High Court in reference to Sanjay Dutt's early release that remains disputed.

The report would entail how remission granted to Sanjay Dutt was within the legal realms and abiding the regulation laid by the government.

According to India Today investigation on how remission is granted, it was found that as per rules, every convict facing a 10 year sentence could only face 7 and half years of rigorous imprisonment that too excluding the furlough and parole granted to them.

Source from Yerwada Prisons Department said that



the report will mention the AGCR (Annual Good Conduct Report) which also grants convicts facing rigorous imprisonment remission of additional 30 days.

This 30 days remission is recommended by jail staffers on the basis of good behavior of convicts, their participation in activities among other criteria.

The other question that remains is Sanjay Dutt's two-day late return to the prison in December 2015 during his furlough, which was supposedly overlooked while making a report on his conduct. Such actions are generally considered as a serious violation while granting remissions.
